Frequently asked questions

What our users ask most about unknown callers, phone spam, and protecting your privacy in the UK.

How do I identify a UK spam call?

Search the number on Who's Called to see if other users have reported it as spam. You can also use apps like Truecaller or Hiya to identify unknown callers. UK networks such as BT, EE, Vodafone, O2, and Three offer call-screening features. If the number starts with 070, 084, or 087, it may be a premium-rate or nuisance number. Forward spam texts to 7726 to report them to your network.

What is the 7726 service?

7726 (which spells SPAM on a phone keypad) is a free text-forwarding service run by all major UK mobile networks. When you receive a spam or scam text, forward it to 7726. Your network will investigate and may block the sender. You can also report spam calls by texting the word "call" followed by the offending number to 7726. This helps Ofcom and the networks identify and shut down nuisance callers.

How do I report nuisance calls to the ICO?

You can report nuisance calls and texts to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) at ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint. The ICO enforces the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR) 2003 and can fine organisations up to £500,000 for serious breaches. Before reporting, note the date, time, and number of the call, what was said, and whether you had previously consented to contact. You can also report fraud-related calls to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040, or call 159 (the Stop Scams helpline) if you think you are being scammed in real time.

What is the TPS and how do I register?

The Telephone Preference Service (TPS) is a free register that allows you to opt out of unsolicited sales and marketing calls. You can sign up at tpsonline.org.uk or by calling 0345 070 0707. Once registered, it is unlawful for organisations to make live marketing calls to your number unless you have specifically consented. Registration takes up to 28 days to become fully effective. There is also the Corporate TPS (CTPS) for business lines.

Can I block unknown callers on my phone?

On Android, open your recent calls, long-press the number, and select "Block". On iPhone, tap the info icon next to the number in Recents, scroll down to "Block this Caller", and confirm. Both systems also let you silence unknown callers from the Phone app settings. BT, Sky, and TalkTalk landline customers can activate free call-blocking features. You can also use third-party apps like Truecaller or Hiya for additional protection.

Is it illegal to make spam calls in the UK?

Yes. Under the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR) 2003, organisations must not make unsolicited direct marketing calls to individuals registered with the TPS, and must not make automated marketing calls without prior consent. The ICO can issue fines of up to £500,000 for serious breaches. Under UK GDPR, individuals also have the right to object to direct marketing at any time. Ofcom regulates nuisance calls and can revoke the phone numbers of persistent offenders.
